Therrien 7x5 300dpi EVENT: Saturday Oct. 3   Scotiabank presents Nuit Blanche 2009

Scotiabank along with the City of Toronto is proud to present the 4th Annual Nuit Blanche – a free all-night contemporary arts thing.  Beginning on October 3 at 6:55PM to sunrise.  Think doing all-nighters is only for college kids?  Think again, with just over 130 free and accessible contemporary arts projects through out the city (organized into 3 zones), you’ll be sure to find something that will peak your interest.

Featured exhibits include:

MONUMENTAL PROJECT AT CITY HALL

  • The City has commissioned a large installation by internationally renowned artist D.A. Therrien to capitalize on the iconic infrastructure of Toronto City Hall.
  • Therrien‘s BEAUTIFUL LIGHT: FOUR LETTER WORD MACHINE will suspend four giant light sculptures in the air between City Hall Towers, above Council Chambers, blasting an ever-changing array of four-letter word patterns all night long.

BATTLE ROYAL IN THE BUS STATION

  • The Toronto Bus Depot will, for one night only, be the site of a caged, blindfolded grudge match between New York performance artist and fighter Sean ‘El Conquistador’ Leonardo and 20 other men in Battle Royal.

MONOPOLY WITH REAL MONEY IN THE TORONTO STOCK EXCHANGE

  • In the financial district, veteran conceptual artist and Order of Canada recipient IAIN BAXTER& will gather Toronto media personalities and celebrities to play an all-night version of the iconic real estate game, Monopoly, inside the Toronto Stock Exchange – with real money.

DIVINE ITOUCH ENCOUNTERS AT THE SHERATON CENTRE

  • At the Sheraton Centre, installation/performance artists FASTWÜRMS will transform the waterfall atrium, lobby and gardens into a zone of divinatory encounters through iTouch technology.

MAS HYSTERIA

  • References “mas making” or masquerade.  35 life-sized wire sculptures, dancers in fluorescent costume, live music provided by a troupe of costumed steel-pan players and a photographic exhibition showcasing the process of creating masks, costumes and steel-pan music in a warehouse painted all black.
