On Friday night, A$AP Rocky made his first ever Canadian tour stop as he came to the Opera House in Toronto. After doing an in-store appearance at Community 54 from 6 – 7:30, Rocky and the rest of the A$AP Mob were spotted entering the Opera House through the back door with an unidentified member of their entourage wearing a YMCMB hat, foreshadowing the ‘surprise’ to come.
Performing for a capacity crowd of 850, 6th Letter and Raz Fresco opened with a 20 minute set before ‘That Pretty Muthafucka’ came out at 10:30 to raucous applause. The all ages crowd swarmed the front of the stage, forming a sea of outstretched hands hoping to touch Rocky as the speakers blasted “Pretty Flacko” as he jumped across the stage. It took all of two minutes before A$AP Rocky and A$AP Twelvy flung themselves into the awaiting arms and surfed through the crowd before getting pulled back onstage by security.
“I came here to have fun, I didn’t come here to perform” said Rocky, but somehow he managed to do both. He started numerous chants of ‘ASAP’ while he worked through singles from Live.Love.A$AP like “Wassup” & “Bass”, and strongly encouraged that everyone spark one up and the lights be dimmed purple during his “Purple Swag Vol. 1″ performance. ”Fuck security if they say you can’t smoke” joked Rocky, who reached out into the crowd to smoke a blunt himself. Adding to his reputation of being an untroubled MC, Rocky even stopped half way through “Get Lit” to break up a fight in the front row, adding instructions to “stop picking on the white boy”. On top of performing his own hits, A$AP Rocky gave the crowd a “Hot Boyz history lesson” by covering Juvenile’s “Ha” to a lukewarm reception.
With his set almost over, Rocky likened Toronto to a multicultural “Crayola box” and announced that he had a special surprise for the audience. Just then, a familiar face in an OVO Canada Goose Jacket walked on stage. Drake preformed “Cameras” & “The Motto” while A$AP Rocky was swallowed up by the crowd (again). After officially welcoming him to Toronto, Aubrey walked off stage to allow Rocky to close his set with “Peso” and an a capella performance of “Out Of This World”. Leaving the stage at 11:30 to deafening chants of “ASAP”, it was obvious Rocky’s fan base is one that will continue to support the Harlem native through his breakout rookie year.
